Currency and billing-period errors in AI pricing answers

Compare currency, seats, payment cadence and commitment before flagging an AI pricing error, with worked vendor examples.

To diagnose a currency or billing-period error in an AI pricing answer, compare the same currency, price unit, payment cadence, commitment and market. A monthly equivalent can differ from the amount due at checkout while describing the same offer. Preserve missing conditions as unknown before deciding whether the answer conflicts with your vendor source.

A QuotedWrong provisional pricing scan can flag a claim for inspection. This guide gives the vendor reviewer a way to assess it. You will need the full sampled answer, a dated capture of the applicable pricing page, and the selected country, currency and billing option.

  1. Split the answer into five comparison axes.
  2. Normalize an annual amount only when the terms support it.
  3. Separate payment frequency from commitment.
  4. Calculate the relevant quantity without inventing extras.
  5. Write a scoped finding and clarify the source sentence.

1. Use five axes before comparing numbers

Copy the answer’s exact pricing statement into a worksheet. Next to it, transcribe the relevant vendor statement without rewriting either into your preferred terminology. Fill one row at a time. This exposes whether a difference is numerical, conditional or simply unresolved.

AxisQuestion for the reviewerCommon unresolved detail
CurrencyWhich currency does each amount name?A dollar sign without an established currency
DenominatorPer seat, account, workspace or usage unit?A team total compared with a per-user price
Payment cadenceWhat is charged, and how often?A monthly equivalent presented without the annual bill
CommitmentWhat contract term applies?Monthly payments assumed to mean month-to-month terms
MarketWhich country, region and customer eligibility apply?A price from a different regional offer

Attach tax, discount, minimum-quantity and source-date notes to the grid. They affect the interpretation but should not disappear into a guessed total. For example, an unknown tax treatment is not a zero tax rate. An unspecified volume discount is not evidence that five seats cost less than five individual seats.

The grid is a proposed editorial review method, not an industry standard or a measured accuracy score. Its purpose is to make the evidence gap specific enough that another person can resolve it.

2. Separate a monthly equivalent from an annual bill

Consider this fictional offer, prepared on 26 September 2026: “Team costs USD 20 per seat per month equivalent, billed USD 240 per seat annually.” The two amounts are arithmetically consistent because 20 multiplied by 12 is 240.

An answer saying “Team costs USD 20 per seat per month, billed annually” preserves the key payment condition. An answer saying only “Team costs USD 20 per month” drops the unit and annual billing context. That shorter answer may be incomplete even though its number comes from the offer.

An answer saying “You pay USD 20 each month and can use a month-to-month subscription” introduces a different payment and commitment claim. Assess those fields against the source rather than calling the amount alone wrong. The distinction tells your team what wording needs attention.

Illustrative arithmetic: USD 20 × 12 months = USD 240 per seat per annual billing period. This establishes a monthly equivalent. It does not establish a monthly payment option, refund policy, tax total or right to cancel after one month.

Only normalize periods after identifying the relevant price. Dividing a one-time setup fee by 12 would create a monthly equivalent the offer never promised. Keep recurring subscription charges, one-time fees and usage charges in separate rows.

3. Separate payment frequency from commitment

An annual plan can be paid in monthly instalments. That is different from both annual prepayment and a month-to-month subscription. Adobe’s billing documentation, accessed 26 September 2026, provides a real example of annual plans paid monthly. The applicable cancellation and regional terms still need their own source.

For your own offer, write payment cadence and commitment as separate fields. If the page says “annual plan, paid monthly,” an answer that calls it “monthly billing” may be describing the payment schedule correctly. An answer that adds “no annual commitment” would make a separate claim to review.

Do not infer contract flexibility from a payment API’s interval alone. Stripe’s Price object stores recurring interval and interval count as pricing fields, but your full customer terms may contain conditions outside that object. The payment configuration is useful supporting evidence for the vendor’s investigation; the applicable source statement still matters.

A review is ready to proceed when payment frequency and commitment can each be stated independently. If the public copy does not establish one of them, flag the source ambiguity as well as the answer ambiguity. Fixing your own sentence may be the most concrete action available.

4. Calculate the relevant quantity

Return to the invented annual-prepaid offer: USD 240 per seat annually. For five seats, the annual base charge is USD 1,200, calculated as 240 multiplied by five. Its monthly equivalent is USD 100 for the five-seat group. These are different representations of the same base subscription arithmetic.

Illustrative statementCalculationScope
One seat, annual base chargeUSD 20 × 12 = USD 240One annual payment per seat
Five seats, annual base chargeUSD 240 × 5 = USD 1,200Five seats, before unspecified extras
Five seats, monthly equivalentUSD 1,200 ÷ 12 = USD 100Comparison figure, not a monthly invoice

All amounts in this table are hypothetical, prepared on 26 September 2026. No tax, discount, setup fee or usage charge is specified. The table therefore gives a base subscription calculation, not a complete quote or checkout total.

Look for minimum quantities before deciding what a small team can purchase. If an offer requires ten seats, a five-person team’s minimum purchase may not equal five times the unit price. Retain the exact condition and calculate only what the source supports. For usage-based pricing, preserve the unit and applicable tier rather than multiplying an unqualified starting rate across all consumption.

Keep currency and market explicit

A matching number does not establish a matching offer. USD 20 and EUR 20 are different currency amounts even when their numerals are identical. A dollar sign can also be ambiguous without country or currency context. Write the explicit currency code from the source, and leave the answer’s currency unresolved if it cannot be established.

Do not convert one regional offer into another using an exchange rate and call the result the vendor’s local price. A vendor may publish independently set regional amounts. Compare the answer with the applicable offer, not a calculated estimate that the vendor did not publish.

If the observation lacks a market setting, document what is known: the prompt wording, locale supplied to the collection tool, selected source page and any visible currency. A language setting alone should not be silently promoted into a verified customer country.

Worked case: a Stripe fee quote without a comparable source

This public scan contains two sampled responses and shows why the axes matter. The source page stripe.com/pricing was captured on 2 October 2026 at 18:49:53 UTC, and both model responses were observed at 18:50:45 UTC. The collection supplied country US and language en.

EvidenceWhat was recordedWhat it supports
Perplexity (sonar)“2.9% + $0.30 per successful transaction” for online domestic card paymentsAn assistant claim only, not a verified Stripe price
ChatGPT (gpt-5-mini-2025-08-07)Asked whether the query meant buying stripe.com or using Stripe paymentsNo usable price
First-party sourceThe captured page returned German-language navigationNo matching first-party price was pinned
MarketCountry US and language en were suppliedGerman navigation does not establish a customer market

Review status: unsupported comparison, needs review. Nothing here confirms a pricing error. The 2.9% + $0.30 figure is what an assistant said, and no first-party statement was pinned to compare it with.

The next action belongs to the vendor. Identify which product the question concerns, align currency, unit and market, and obtain a dated first-party statement that is comparable with the quote. A person then decides whether a conflict exists. On 11 October 2026 the public scan for this case listed 12 claims needing human review, with 0 classified as potential discrepancies.

5. Write a finding that preserves the distinction

A useful review note might read: “The sampled answer’s USD 20 amount matches the source’s per-seat monthly equivalent. The answer omits annual prepayment and does not establish a market. Payment cadence and market alignment remain unresolved.” That gives the next reviewer something concrete to inspect.

If human review establishes a conflict, name the conflicting field and the dated source that supports the finding. The QuotedWrong method separates machine-extracted potential discrepancies from human-reviewed conclusions. Do not upgrade a provisional flag because the number looks surprising.

For your source page, keep the full sentence together: currency, amount, unit, payment cadence and commitment. Use the pricing-page checklist to inspect selectors and nearby conditions. If all offer fields align but the amount appears historical, follow the old-price diagnosis instead.

Questions about annual and monthly descriptions

What is the difference between annual and monthly subscription plans?

The label can refer to commitment, payment cadence, or both. For a vendor accuracy review, record both fields separately. Annual prepaid, annual paid monthly and month-to-month are distinct offer descriptions; your source should establish which one applies.

Is it better to be billed monthly or annually?

That buyer preference does not decide whether an AI quote is accurate. Your review should establish whether the answer preserves the payment schedule and commitment your offer actually states. Avoid substituting a recommendation about savings or flexibility for that factual comparison.
