How ChatGPT answers SaaS pricing questions

Understand AI pricing answers, preserve their sources, and compare the full offer before calling a quoted price wrong.

ChatGPT can answer SaaS pricing questions using learned information, the context supplied in a conversation, or web search. The answer alone rarely establishes which source produced a particular claim. To assess your company’s quoted price, preserve the response, open its citations, and compare the complete offer with a dated first-party source.

A QuotedWrong provisional pricing scan can give your team a starting observation. The work that follows is a comparison: same plan, same market, same billing terms, with uncertainty kept visible. A confident sentence is not a reviewed finding.

Start with what the answer actually shows

OpenAI’s accuracy guidance, accessed 26 September 2026, acknowledges that ChatGPT can give incorrect or misleading answers. Its search documentation explains that answers using search can include citations. Neither statement tells a vendor how a particular price entered a particular response.

Separate observable evidence from an explanation you suspect. You can record that an answer said “USD 20 per user per month,” linked a review page, and was observed on a particular date. You cannot establish from that wording alone that the model used an old training example, a cached page, or a specific unpublished source. Write suspected causes in a separate notes field, away from the finding.

An uncited answer can contain the right price. A citation can point to a page that does not support the amount beside it. Open the link and locate the relevant passage. If the page has changed since the response was generated, retain that timing difference rather than treating today’s page as a recording of what the assistant saw.

A pricing answer is more than its amount

“20 a month” leaves several unresolved questions. It might mean a monthly equivalent of an annual payment, a month-to-month subscription, a per-seat charge, or a starting price for a particular region. A vendor comparing that sentence with a pricing card showing “240 annually” has not yet established a disagreement.

Break the answer into claims small enough to review. One claim might concern the price; another might say the plan includes unlimited users. A correct amount does not validate the feature claim. Keep the source for each claim beside the claim itself so a reviewer can disagree with one assessment without discarding the whole response.

Use the vendor’s pricing page and applicable plan documentation as first-party evidence. Capture the selected currency, country and billing option. When the public page redirects or personalizes its content, record the destination and the visible selection. Do not silently substitute the offer you intended to display for the offer the capture actually shows.

A worked evidence worksheet

The following company, plan, amounts and timestamps are illustrative. They demonstrate an editorial worksheet, not a QuotedWrong customer result or an observed AI error. The invented source is captured on 26 September 2026 at 09:00 UTC; the invented answer is observed at 09:10 UTC that day.

Review stateUnclear pending market confirmationArithmetic agreement is narrower than offer agreement.

The useful result is the unresolved field. The amount and payment statement are compatible, but this record does not establish market alignment or every applicable condition. A reviewer should ask for the missing context before issuing a complete match or discrepancy verdict. Marking the whole answer wrong because it uses a monthly equivalent would lose the distinction the evidence supports.

Keep the sample’s boundary attached

A single sampled response describes one observation. Record the platform, observable model label, access surface, locale, time and any enabled search setting. If a provider does not disclose a model, write “not disclosed.” An API sample and a consumer chat interface are different observation surfaces; an answer captured through one does not prove what every customer sees through the other.

The QuotedWrong comparison method describes how sampled answers are compared with dated pricing sources. Machine-extracted findings remain potential discrepancies until human review. That distinction matters when sharing a report internally: a provisional flag is a request to inspect evidence, not permission to publish an accusation.

For a repeat sample, retain the original prompt and context, and record any change to the source or collection method. A different result can be useful without establishing why it changed. Avoid turning a handful of responses into a marketwide error rate or a claim about every assistant.

Choose a finding the evidence can support

  • Use matched for a claim whose relevant fields align with the dated source.
  • Use unclear when a field, citation or applicable condition is missing.
  • Use potential discrepancy for a machine-flagged conflict that still needs review.
  • Reserve a confirmed discrepancy for a human-reviewed conflict with an adequate source trail.

Inspect a sample pricing report before choosing how to present findings to colleagues. If the evidence points to a historical amount, continue with the old-price diagnosis workflow. It separates a superseded offer from a valid legacy plan and from a source that cannot be established.

Questions vendors ask about ChatGPT pricing answers

Does ChatGPT give incorrect information?

Yes, as OpenAI’s accuracy guidance acknowledges. For your pricing, establish a claim-level disagreement against a dated, applicable vendor source before calling a specific answer incorrect. General model limitations do not prove a particular price is wrong.

Why is ChatGPT getting my company’s pricing wrong?

The response alone may not reveal the cause. Inspect the plan, market, payment terms and cited page first. Those observations can identify a mismatch or an unresolved field; they cannot reliably reconstruct the model’s hidden source-selection process.
